Purpose

But how does it work? A cutting-edge, foot-operated controller allows officers to maintain full control with both hands on the wheel, enhancing focus and safety during high-stakes pursuits. Say goodbye to the cumbersome handheld mic; a toggle switch seamlessly connects to the main radio, while a floor-mounted foot pedal links to a microphone mounted on the ceiling or visor of the police car. This setup ensures convenient, hands-free communication, reducing the chance of collisions. Collisions involving police vehicles during pursuits are among the top three reasons for legal actions against a city’s police department. But that’s not all! During stakeouts, Hands Free Pursuit offers a stealth advantage. With no microphone visible, the invention helps officers blend in as ordinary motorists. Its versatile design makes it ideal for other industries that require efficient dispatch communication as well.

Story Behind the Invention

William Thielman

Inventor William Thielman, a police officer with over 30 years of service, has created an impressive innovation aimed at enhancing the safety and efficiency of law enforcement.

Having served with the Los Angeles and Santa Ana Police Departments, Thielman was directly involved in approximately 800 vehicle pursuits. These decades of frontline experience gave him a clear understanding of the risks and challenges officers face, leading him to develop the Hands Free Pursuit system.

One of the key problems this invention addresses is the high rate of collisions involving police vehicles during pursuits. These collisions are among the top three reasons for legal action against police departments. By helping officers stay fully focused on driving, Hands Free Pursuit could minimize these incidents and create safer outcomes.

Additionally, with no microphone visible, the invention will help officers blend in as ordinary motorists during stakeouts or undercover operations. This will help them maintain their cover and carry out their duties with greater effectiveness than ever before.

Although designed for law enforcement, the system has the potential to benefit other industries that rely on dispatch communication. Emergency services, delivery networks, and trucking companies could all gain from implementing this forward-thinking technology.
